Chase the 47lb 5oz Record At Llyn Brenig

The current British rod-caught pike record stands at 47lb 5oz, set by Lloyd Watson at Chew Valley Lake in February 2024. For decades, the 46lb 13oz Welsh record from Llandegfedd Lake held the top spot, proving that Welsh reservoirs have the ecosystems to produce world-class predators.

Now, all eyes are on Llyn Brenig as the next potential record-breaker.

Why Llyn Brenig?

As one of the largest bodies of inland water in Wales, Llyn Brenig offers the perfect environment for pike to reach massive proportions.

Food Source: A premier trout fishery, the lake provides pike with a high-protein diet of rainbow and brown trout, allowing them to gain weight rapidly.

Proven Monsters: Pike over 40lbs are already recorded. Local anglers and experts believe a new British record-sized fish could be lurking in its depths.

Ideal Habitat: With 23km of shoreline and expansive deep water, large pike have ample space to grow undisturbed.

Plan Your Record-Breaking Trip

If you catch a pike weighing around 47lb, contact the visitor centre and we will be able to assist.

Get clear evidence

Take good quality photos of the fish (side-on, showing full body).
Photograph the fish on the scales with the weight clearly visible. We can provide calibrated and certified scales to weigh the fish accurately.
Measure length and girth if possible.
The weight must be witnessed by at least one independent person (more is better).

Look after the fish

Handle it carefully and keep it wet.
If the rules allow, the fish can be returned alive after weighing and photos.
Welfare always comes first — a dead fish with poor evidence won’t help a claim.

Record the details

Note the date, venue, method, bait/lure, and names/contact details of witnesses.

Submit the claim

Full details are available via the British Record Fish Committee on the angling trust website – it’s worth saving the link before you go fishing.

https://anglingtrust.net/get-involved/record-fish/

Claims must be submitted within the required time period (don’t leave it too late).
